Chapter 5

This chapter emphasizes using social tools to help support connected learning. It mentions various websites that exemplify the type of connected learning. "Our focus should always be on what we can do with the tool. Tools should be used to serve the learning," (Nussbaum-Beach & Hall, 73). Although the book mentions tools that I am familiar with, such as Twitter and Podcasts, there were also interesting tools that I have not heard of or used before. These tools are ways for the educator to connect to students or people with interests in the topic. Podcasts are one of my favorites, as it is an informational learning tool through audio and video. "Learning comes through all forms of communication, not just the written word," (Nussbaum-Beach & Hall, 80) This is a smart tool as some people cannot always understand something from reading it, they do better listening.

Social networking is also important when it comes to building an online profile, it helps you stay up to date on your interested topics. "There are plenty of tools online to build and nurture your personal learning network," (Nussbaum-Beach & Hall, 85). These social networking platforms allow us to stay connected online with our special interest groups. One common social networking tool is Ning, which allows users to create specialized social space for people. "For example, online social networks can help you find your next job, help your parent, or help you as an educator," (Nussbaum-Beach & Hall, 86).

Most social networking tools these days are used for extending learning in the classroom. Tools such as TeacherTube are "educational videos made for teachers by teachers," (Nussbaum-Beach & Hall, 86). It allows educators to share information other educators may need or something they might be more interest in learning about, such as different teaching techniques and ways to set up the proper learning environment for their students.

One way I could use social networking and connections with my current job as a retail worker and apparel designer is to see what the latest trends and styles are. Social networking tools such as Twitter can help me narrow down what people are looking for in styles. Twitter also allows messaging between people, so customers would be able to have direct contact with us about what they want to see more of in the store. What tool did you read about in the chapter that you found interesting, and think you might try it out?
